Sustainable energy sources and artificial intelligence - the new success factors for steel

The steel industry has taken the lead in the climate-friendly transformation of the industry.
taken the lead. In order for sustainable steel to achieve a breakthrough, the industry will need not only
economic policy tailwind, the industry will primarily need a reliable supply of green electricity and non-fossil
non-fossil gases such as hydrogen and ammonia. Artificial intelligence supports this and thus
algorithms and data processing enable successful optimisations in steel. But what is
what is the current status of ongoing AI projects? One thing is already clear: smart supply is becoming a
key factor for Europe as a steel location.

Looking back on the 2023 HÜTTENTAG

The market for climate-friendly steel products is developing rapidly. But when is steel actually "green" and how can "CO2-reduced" be described in an understandable way? What concrete efforts are being implemented in companies to produce steel in a climate-friendly way was addressed at HÜTTENTAG 2023.

Steel's annual technology event in the heart of Europe took place for the fifth time in the city of Essen, Germany, on 16 November 2023 under the patronage of the Lord Mayor of Essen, Thomas Kufen. The venue was again the modern and bright Glass Foyer East of Messe Essen fairgrounds. 320 participants as well as 26 exhibitors and sponsors met to discuss what the steel industry is doing in the energy and climate transition. The conference and exhibition has again addressed the industry's most pressing challenges.  It featured three keynote adresses from high-ranking speakers, a panel discussion and 22 technical presentations on commercial solutions for the steel industry.

The steel industry has accepted the challenge of the climate transition and launched investment programmes for decarbonisation worth billions of Euros. However, the high energy prices are a hurdle that can only be tackled with strong financial commitment of the governments, as "green" steel is indispensable for the society. Replacing blast furnaces with climate-friendly direct reduction plants and the resulting need for large quantities of renewable electric power and fossil-free hydrogen are just some of the specific topics currently being discussed. Commercial solutions for this were the focus of the HÜTTENTAG 2023 conference, for which DVS Media GmbH and Messe Essen GmbH, as joint organisers, have drawn a more than positive balance.
